The eye of wisdom, when broken, cannot distinguish between good and bad. One who has ten or twenty companions is called a great sage.
This couplet offers a sharp critique of superficial wisdom. Kabir uses the metaphor of the 'eye of wisdom' (विवेक की आँख) to represent clear discernment; if that clarity is compromised, distinguishing right from wrong becomes impossible. He observes that society often labels anyone surrounded by many companions as a great sage. Kabir's perspective here is that true wisdom is not measured by social status or popularity, but by the depth of one's inner understanding. It’s a powerful reminder that true enlightenment comes from within.
