शास्त्रीय शायरी में 'हौसला' का अर्थ साहस, धैर्य या सहन करने की आंतरिक क्षमता (ज़र्फ़) होता है। इस शे'र में 'इज्ज़-ए-हौसला' से तात्पर्य चेतना के संताप को झेलने में हिम्मत की लाचारी या सामर्थ्य के अभाव से है। यहाँ यह शराब के प्याले के विस्तार और दिल की बर्दाश्त दोनों की ओर संकेत करता है।

व्युत्पत्ति

Arabic حَوْصَلَة (ḥawṣala), originally denoting the crop of a bird, figuratively extended in Persian and Urdu to capacity, stomach, and courage.

प्रयोग

In the ghazal, it is often paired with themes of wine and vessel capacity, or contrasted with 'ijz' (weakness) to measure the lover's ability to endure suffering.
