उर्दू शायरी में 'सख़्तियाँ' का अर्थ मुसीबतें, कठोरता या ज़ुल्म होता है। इस शेर में इसका प्रयोग दिल पर जबरन नियंत्रण और आत्म-दमन की कठोरता के लिए हुआ है, ताकि रक़ीब की अनदेखी की जा सके। यह आशिक़ की दिली पीड़ा और आत्म-प्रताड़ना को व्यक्त करता है।

Persian 'sakht' (hard, rigid) + abstract noun suffix '-i', with the Hindustani feminine plural inflection '-yaan'.
