विस्तार
यह एक सामासिक शब्द है जिसका अर्थ वध-स्थल, बलि-वेदी या क़त्लगाह होता है। उर्दू शायरी में यह रूपक के तौर पर महबूब की गली या चौखट के लिए प्रयुक्त होता है जहाँ आशिक़ अपनी जान न्योछावर करते हैं। प्रस्तुत शेर में महबूब की गली को ऐसी बिस्मिल-गाह बताया गया है जहाँ चारों ओर से ख़ून की गंध आ रही है।
व्युत्पत्ति
Compound of Arabic 'bismil' (slaughtered animal, derived from the ritual invocation 'bismillah') and Persian suffix '-gah' (place, site).
प्रयोग
Consistently used in Urdu ghazals as an exaggerated metaphor for the beloved's lane, casting the beloved as a heartless executioner and the lover as an eager sacrifice.
