शाब्दिक अर्थ मोतियों अथवा दानों को धागे में गूँथ कर हार या लड़ी बनाना है। प्रस्तुत शे'र में मीर ने पलकों से गिरते आँसुओं को मोती और उनके लगातार बहने को 'मोती पिरोना' कहकर विरह का सजीव रूपक बाँधा है। शायरी में यह लफ़्ज़ कई बार शे'र कहने की नफ़ासत के लिए भी इस्तेमाल होता है।

व्युत्पत्ति

Derived from Sanskrit 'प्रोत' (prota, meaning pierced, sewn, or strung), which evolved through Prakrit into modern Hindustani as 'पिरोना' (pironā) / 'پرونا' (paronā/pironā).

प्रयोग

In the classical Urdu ghazal, 'मोती पिरोना' (threading pearls) is a cherished trope used alternately for shedding brilliant tears of grief and for the artistic perfection of composing poetry.
