उदासी, निराशा, म्लानता या दिल का बुझना।

उर्दू शायरी में 'अफ़्सुर्दगी' का आशय दिल के बुझने, म्लान होने या गहरी निराशा से है। प्रस्तुत शे'र में यह दिल के ठंडे पड़ जाने की वह पीड़ादायी स्थिति है, जो किसी जीवित शोले से भी अधिक आत्मा को जलाती है।

व्युत्पत्ति

Persian, from 'afsurdan' (to freeze, wither, or congeal), suffix '-gī' denoting state or abstract quality.

प्रयोग

Commonly deployed in the ghazal as an antithesis to flame ('shola') and burning passion ('soz') to dramatize the death of desire.
