Ghazal
This ghazal reminisces about the days when we were in your embrace, when we were filled with sorrow and melancholy. It speaks of knowing enmity even towards strangers, and how a unique atmosphere was created even among friends. It also addresses those who could not lift their eyes even in the presence of the sick.

How wonderful were those days when we were in your captivity, when we were among the sorrowful, melancholic, and oppressed by cruelty.
How wonderful were those days when we were in your captivity, when we were among the sorrowful, melancholic, and oppressed by cruelty.

Now, for strangers, they know our enmity,
But for our friends, a different atmosphere has formed.
Now, our enmity is known to strangers, but a different atmosphere has formed for our friends.

Do not pass by my dust, O moon, from the marble floor; / We too were among the adornments of a flowing stream.
Do not pass by my dust, O moon, from the marble floor; / We too were among the adornments of a flowing stream.

You did not even see me there, though I am dead; oh, what cruel people, you were in the sick among them.
You did not even lift your eyes to see me there, though I am dead; oh, what cruel people, you were among the sick.

Sheikh-ji, is something wrong with your handkerchief, or are you also among the intoxicated, wine-loving, and agitated ones?
Sheikh-ji, is there something wrong with your handkerchief, or are you also among the intoxicated, wine-loving, and agitated ones?

The crime of love was proven even against strangers, O Beloved,
Yet to commit the murder, we ourselves were the guilty ones.
is that even though the crime of love was proven even against strangers, O Beloved, we ourselves were the guilty ones to commit the murder.

In the flush of Mizgaan, pieces were torn apart,
Heart and liver, O Meer, both in your grief-makers' hands.
In the line of Mizgaan, pieces were torn apart, heart and liver, O Meer, both were in the hands of your grief-makers.
