Keep the yearning for the wine-like intoxication, and converse about the letter of the cup; for in the gathering of the dark-haired ones, there is neither an account nor a book.
This profound couplet by Mir Taqi Mir offers a unique perspective on destiny and consequence. He advises that one should keep the desires (arzoo) alive, and talk to the wine cup (ma-e-khaam) and the letter of the cup (khat-e-jaam). Why? Because when the day of reckoning (hashr) comes, there is no record book (kitab) and no account (hisaab) for the sins of the black horses (siyah kaaron). It suggests that true devotion and living in the moment are more important than fearing earthly judgment.
