हुए थे जैसे मर जाते पर अब तो सख़्त हसरत है
किया दुश्वार नादानी से हम ने कार-ए-आसाँ को
— Mir Taqi Mir
Meaning
It was as if we were dying, but now there is a strong yearning. Through heedlessness, we made what was easy difficult.
Explanation
This couplet speaks to the painful paradox of human longing. The poet describes a state of being, having survived a near-death experience, only to find that the immediate danger has passed. But instead of finding peace, a fierce yearning (hasrat) has taken root. This yearning, born out of foolish naivety, has caused him to needlessly complicate what was once an easy path. It’s the agony of self-sabotage, the struggle between survival and desire.
