झल बावै झल दाहिनै , झलहि माहि त्योहार। आगै-पीछै झलमाई , राखै सिरजनहार॥ 414॥
— Kabir
Meaning
Lest to the left, lest to the right, lest there be a festival in the water. Ever swaying before and behind, the one who adorns the head maintains (the balance).
Explanation
Kabir's Shayar ji uses the imagery of water to describe the restless and volatile nature of human emotions and worldly life. The couplet cautions us against being carried away by excessive emotional swings or the distractions of life's festivals. The 'head-adorned one' who maintains balance symbolizes the steady, disciplined consciousness or the divine grace that keeps us centered. Ultimately, Kabir teaches that true equilibrium is achieved through self-control and spiritual awareness.
