इस तन का दीवा करौ , बाती मेल्यूं जीवउं। लोही सींचो तेल ज्यूं , कब मुख देख पठिउं॥ 256॥
— Kabir
Meaning
Let me make this body a lamp, and my soul the wick. I wish to nourish it with oil like iron, and I want to remain here until you look at my face and I depart.
Explanation
This couplet is a profound spiritual plea. Kabir uses the beautiful metaphor of the lamp (diwa) and the wick (baati) to describe the purpose of human life. The Shayar asks that his body serves as a vessel for divine light, fueled by the devotion of his soul. The request to 'see the face' signifies an intense yearning for continuous and direct union with the divine presence.
