Ghazal
This ghazal by Ghalib delves into profound philosophical questions concerning existence, non-existence, and the omnipresence of God. It explores the burden of being, the numbing effect of sorrow, and a detachment from physical suffering. The poet also reflects on his characteristic habit of contemplating 'what if' scenarios.

When nothing was, God was; if nothing existed, God would be.My own existence has drowned me; if I were not, then what would be?
God was present when nothing else existed, and God would still be if nothing were to exist. My very existence has engulfed me; if I were not to exist, then what would truly be?

When sorrow has rendered me so numb, what grief is there in my head being severed?Had it not parted from my body, it would have rested on my knee.
When I became so numb from sorrow, what grief is there in my head being severed? If it had not been separated from my body, it would merely be resting on my knee.

Ages have passed since Ghalib died, but I still recall his constant query at every turn: 'If it were so, then what?'
It's been a long time since Ghalib died, but he is still remembered. Specifically, his habit of asking at every point, 'If it were like this, then what would happen?'
