Ghazal
This ghazal explores the profound complexities of unrequited love, where the beloved, despite their harshness, occasionally feels a pang of kindness or shame. The lover, however, finds himself irresistibly drawn to them, even as attempts to distance himself fail. The poem highlights a state of emotional paralysis due to the beloved's mistrust and the lover's own weakness, making direct communication impossible.

Should ever a kind thought for me cross their mind, it seems,Then remembering their cruelties, they feel ashamed of their own deeds.
If a kind thought ever crosses their mind for me, they then recall their own cruelties and feel ashamed.

O God, the effect of my heart's passion seems quite reversed, it's true,For the more I try to pull it back, the further it's drawn away from me, anew.

That ill-tempered one, and my love's tale is long;Though brief the message, the messenger is bewildered by me.
That person is ill-tempered, and my love story is exceedingly long. Even if the message I need to convey is brief, the messenger becomes flustered just by interacting with me.

Allow me to recover, O despair, what a doomsday this has become,
That the skirt of my beloved's thought slips away from me.
O despair, allow me to steady myself. What a calamity it is that the very thought of my beloved is slipping away from me.

Let's set formality aside; even in mere beholding, it is true, butWhen will that true sight be seen? How can I endure this cruelty?
Let's put formalities aside; even if mere beholding is considered sufficient, when will the true, desired vision be seen? How long can I endure this cruelty of only being able to look from afar?

My feet were wounded first in love's battle,Now I can neither flee nor stand still.
My feet were wounded first in the battle of love. Consequently, I can neither run nor stand still.

It is doomsday, Ghalib, that my rival becomes his companion,That infidel (my beloved) whom I cannot entrust even to God himself.
It is a calamity, Ghalib, that my rival becomes the companion of that beloved, that infidel whom I cannot even entrust to God himself.
