गई वो बात कि हो गुफ़्तुगू तो क्यूँकर हो

गई वो बात कि हो गुफ़्तुगू तो क्यूँकर हो
कहे से कुछ न हुआ फिर कहो तो क्यूँकर हो
That time has passed, how can conversation ensue? No good came from speaking, how can one speak anew?
That time or situation has passed, so how can a conversation take place? When nothing was achieved by speaking, how can one speak again?

हमारे ज़ेहन में उस फ़िक्र का है नाम विसाल
कि गर न हो तो कहाँ जाएँ हो तो क्यूँकर हो
That thought, 'union', in our minds it's named;If it exists not, where could we then go?If it exists, then how could it be famed?
In our minds, that thought is named 'union'. If it doesn't exist, where would we go, and if it does exist, how could it be possible?

अदब है और यही कश्मकश तो क्या कीजे
हया है और यही गू-मगू तो क्यूँकर हो
If 'tis decorum, and this very struggle, then what course to choose?If 'tis modesty, and this indecision, then how can it come to pass?

तुम्हीं कहो कि गुज़ारा सनम-परस्तों का
बुतों की हो अगर ऐसी ही ख़ू तो क्यूँकर हो
You tell me how those who worship idols can cope,If such is the nature of idols, how can there be hope?
You tell me, how will idol-worshippers cope if the idols' nature is like this?

उलझते हो तुम अगर देखते हो आईना
जो तुम से शहर में हों एक दो तो क्यूँकर हो
You frown when you behold your image in the glass,For how could one or two like you through this city pass?
You get troubled when you look in the mirror. How would it be if there were even one or two people like you in the city?

जिसे नसीब हो रोज़-ए-सियाह मेरा सा
वो शख़्स दिन न कहे रात को तो क्यूँकर हो
The one whose fate holds a dark day, as black as mine, How could that person not call the night 'day', and repine?
For someone whose fate is to experience a dark day like mine, how is it possible that they would not call night 'day'?

हमें फिर उन से उमीद और उन्हें हमारी क़द्र
हमारी बात ही पूछें न वो तो क्यूँकर हो
We still hold hope for them, that they our worth acknowledge;If they don't even inquire of us, how can it then come forth?
We still hope for them and wish for them to acknowledge our worth. But if they don't even inquire about us, how can this ever happen?

ग़लत न था हमें ख़त पर गुमाँ तसल्ली का
न माने दीदा-ए-दीदार जो तो क्यूँकर हो
My faith in that letter to bring solace was not vain;But if the eye, so keen to see, itself disbelieves, how can it attain?

बताओ उस मिज़ा को देख कर कि मुझ को क़रार
वो नीश हो रग-ए-जाँ में फ़रो तो क्यूँकर हो
Tell me, how can I find peace, once that gaze meets my eye?When that sting, in life's own vein, has settled deep inside?
Tell me, how can I find peace after seeing that gaze? How can it be, when that sting has penetrated deep into the vein of my life?

मुझे जुनूँ नहीं 'ग़ालिब' वले ब-क़ौल-ए-हुज़ूर
फ़िराक़-ए-यार में तस्कीन हो तो क्यूँकर हो
I am not mad, Ghalib, yet as per the venerable word,If solace be found in separation, then how can it occur?
