फ़रियाद की कोई लय नहीं है
नाला पाबंद-ए-नय नहीं है
No melody holds my lament's wild plea, My wail is not bound by the reed-flute's decree.
My lament has no specific melody or rhythm, and my wail is not bound by the tune of a reed-flute.

क्यूँ बोते हैं बाग़बान तोंबे
गर बाग़ गदा-ए-मय नहीं है
Why do gardeners plant these creeping vines,If the garden does not beg for wine?
Why do gardeners plant gourds, if the garden is not a beggar for wine?

हर-चंद हर एक शय में तू है
पर तुझ सी कोई शय नहीं है
Though You reside in everything we see,Nothing exists that can compare to Thee.
Even though You are present in every single thing, yet there is nothing that is like You.

हाँ खाइयो मत फ़रेब-ए-हस्ती
हर-चंद कहें कि है नहीं है
Yes, do not be fooled by existence's deceit, Though they say 'it is', then 'it is not', so bittersweet.
Yes, do not be deceived by the illusion of existence, even though people say 'it is' and then 'it is not'.

शादी से गुज़र कि ग़म न होवे
उरदी जो न हो तो दय नहीं है
Transcend joy, lest sorrow take its hold,If no earthly ground exists, no grace can unfold.
Pass beyond happiness so that sorrow does not occur. If there is no earthly ground or basis, then there is no mercy or grace.

क्यूँ रद्द-ए-क़दह करे है ज़ाहिद
मय है ये मगस की क़य नहीं है
Why does the pious man the wine-cup spurn?This is wine, no fly's disgorged return.
O pious man, why do you reject the wine cup? This is wine, not a fly's vomit.

हस्ती है न कुछ 'अदम है 'ग़ालिब'
आख़िर तू क्या है ऐ नहीं है
Existence is naught, nor non-existence, Ghalib,Tell me, what are you, O 'not-being'?
Ghalib, there is neither existence nor non-existence. Ultimately, what are you, O 'not-being'?

अंजाम-ए-शुमार-ए-ग़म न पूछो
ये मसरफ़-ए-ता-ब-कय नहीं है
Of sorrow's tally, ask not the final sum,This endless task, 'till when,' will never come.
Do not ask about the end of counting sorrows. This task has no 'until when' or end.

जिस दिल में कि ता-ब-कय समा जाए
वाँ 'इज़्ज़त-ए-तख़्त-ए-कय नहीं है
In a heart where Kay's own glory can reside,There, Kay's royal throne holds no esteem.
In a heart where the glory of King Kay can reside, there is no esteem for King Kay's throne.
