Ghazal
This ghazal vividly paints a picture of extreme helplessness and profound sorrow, portraying the heart as a fragile drop of blood perpetually burdened by grief. It explores the depths of unfulfilled desires and the bitter irony that even expressing pain only serves to intensify one's internal suffering, leaving no escape from despair.

In helplessness's realm, one heart, a drop of blood, was all;And even that stays bowed, like a tear about to fall.
In the realm of helplessness, there was one heart, which was just a drop of blood. Even that heart remains bowed down, in the manner of a tear about to drip.

For a while, with that mischievous one, we feigned displeasure, just for formality's sake; But frankly, even that pretense was a distinct manner of our own madness.
For a while, we pretended to be displeased with that mischievous one, just for formality's sake. But frankly, even that pretense was a distinct manner of our own madness.

When will the thought of death bring comfort to my grief-filled heart?Even it, a meager prize, is tangled in desire's net, playing a futile part.
When will the thought of death grant comfort to my grieved heart? Even that (death), a weak prize, is caught in the net of my desires.

I wish I hadn't cried out, my friend, how could I know,That it too would make my inner sorrow grow?
I wish I hadn't cried out, my friend, how could I have known that even that would cause my inner pain to increase?

Do not take such pride in your oppressor's blade so keen,For in my river of impatience, a wave of blood is also seen.
Do not take so much pride in the sharpness of the sword of oppression. For in my river of restlessness, there is also a wave of blood.

Why ask the cup-bearer of the heavens for joy's sweet wine?He himself sits with but a few cups of sorrow, fate malign.
Why desire the wine of joy from the cup-bearer of the heavens? He himself is also sitting with just a few cups of misfortune.

Ghalib, in my heart, I bear both yearning for union and parting's complaint;
Ghalib, in my heart, there is both the desire for union and the complaint of separation. May God bring that day when I can say both this (desire) and that (complaint) to her.

I know what you have thought concerning my fate,O turning of this base sky, may that too quickly be.
I know what you have thought concerning me. O turning of this base sky, may that too quickly come to pass.

Gaze not upon my seeming ease, and promise not the night's arrival,For even that will prove a charm, to banish slumber's light.
Do not look at my comfort, nor promise the arrival of the night, because even that will become a spell to prevent my sleep.
