Ghazal
आमद-ए-ख़त से हुआ है सर्द जो बाज़ार-ए-दोस्त
This ghazal poignantly observes the beloved's maturing beauty, specifically the appearance of downy facial hair ('khat') which is metaphorically likened to the smoke of an extinguished lamp, diminishing the previous ardor. The poet advises the imprudent heart to control its intense longing, acknowledging the overwhelming radiance of the beloved's sight that few can truly bear.

आमद-ए-ख़त से हुआ है सर्द जो बाज़ार-ए-दोस्त
दूद-ए-शम'-ए-कुश्ता था शायद ख़त-ए-रुख़्सार-ए-दोस्त
The beloved's charm, with facial down, has grown so cold, Perhaps that cheek-line was but smoke, from beauty's candle, extinguished and old.
With the arrival of facial hair, the beloved's charm has grown cold; perhaps that line on the cheek was the smoke of an extinguished candle.

My rival asks of my state, in her separation's blight,As if an intimate friend, a sharer of my plight.
My rival inquires about my condition during her absence, as if he were a close friend or someone who genuinely sympathizes with my sorrow. He checks on my well-being with an unexpected intimacy.

This ghazal of mine, I love it from my very core,
For in its radif, Ghalib, 'friend' is repeated, nothing more.
I love this ghazal of mine from the bottom of my heart, Ghalib, because in the radif of its verses, there is simply the repetition of the word 'friend'.
